UPM Raflatac Manufactures New Wave Paper Label Material

UPM Raflatac has revealed their most recent development, which is the innovative New Wave paper label material, which is compatible with recycling and is also the world’s first RecyClass certified paper label for rigid high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and polypropylene (PP).

This new material was launched after the company ran tests on the material and these returned with results that confirmed that the material is compatible even with white and natural material streams. This is a huge breakthrough, as it is natural and white material streams which require the highest purity of recyclates from the recycling processes. It is this achievement with this label, which showcases the amazing step forwards that has been made by this company, when it comes to developments for the recycling of rigid plastic. This accomplishment will also follow the company’s aim to help brand owners continue to work towards enhanced circularity.

New Wave’s label material has been expertly designed to be functional for the full life cycle of products, especially home and personal care products. These include items such as soap bottles or washing detergent containers. The label also endeavours to support the purity of recycled materials, as it will wash cleanly away at only forty degrees Celsius and this can be easily done through the use of normal water with no added chemicals. This brilliant label has now been made available to customers in EMEIA and this has been closely followed through availability within the Asian market.

In order to reach this stage of market availability, New Wave has gone through a series of tests, one of which was to ensure that during its performance, there was no fibreloss during the recycling process. This test was conducted to check that there would be no contamination in the material streams. Once this was confirmed, it meant that the resulting recyclate would be able to be used repeatedly in new packaging and this would not compromise the quality of the product. This method also means that the producers have a wider variety of choice when choosing to use label materials that are derived from a renewable source.

This new creation, highlights that UPM Raflatac is truly dedicated to upholding an innovative spirit and is also committed to maintain the principles of a circular economy.

Director Sustainability, UPM Raflatac, Robert Taylor, commented, “When brands choose the New Wave Label material for their rigid HDPE or PP packaging, they can make the full package eligible for RecyClass certification. Brand owners will not have to test the packaging further if all packaging components have either a letter of compatibility, a technology approval letter, or the material choice meets RecyClass Design for Recycling Guidelines.”

Vice President, Paper Laminates, UPM Raflatac, Sylwia Jurys, mentioned, “This launch marks a significant breakthrough in our efforts to enhance the circularity of plastic packaging. As regulations such as the European Packaging and Packaging Wate Regulation (PPWR) continue to evolve, we have worked with RecyClass to provide a solution that not only meets strict recycling criteria but also sets a new standard for sustainable packaging. We are proud to lead the way in recyclable packaging solutions, helping brand owners meet their sustainability targets and close the loop to support a circular packaging economy.”
