PATNA: In a major embarrassment to Bihar police, thieves broke a brick wall of police store room in Muzaffarpur district and robbed several cartons of seized liquor on Friday.
Officially, liquor is currently out of people’s reach after the state government enforced total prohibition seven years back.
Police said two alcoholics broke the back portion of the brick wall of malkhana (storeroom) located in the premises of Sikandarpur police outpost with the help of chisel and hammer late on Friday night and made away with 56 litres of liquor packed in several cartons.
Reports said it was raining heavily on Friday night and the cops were packed in the official rooms when the daredevil miscreants committed the crime at their free will.
Police came to know about the incident the very next morning when they noticed the broken wall and found several cartons of liquor missing from the malkhana. The said liquor stock had been seized only a couple of days back while being transported by a pick-up van and alto car, and were waiting to be destroyed soon, police said.
“Soon after the incident, the police conducted raids in the areas and recovered 32 litres of the stolen liquor,” Muzaffarpur town ASP Awadhesh Dikshit told TOI on Sunday.
He said the police have arrested a youth involved in the theft while raids are on to nab the another accused. The ASP informed some 400 litres of liquor was available at the malkhana on the day of theft.
Sikandarpur outpost inspector Devvrat Kumar said it was raining heavily on the fateful night and the thieves apparently took advantage of the situation.
Last week, four policemen posted with Vaishali’s Sarai police station were placed under suspension after they were caught allegedly selling huge stocks of seized liquor to a liquor mafia.
Acting on an information, a team of Excise Department officials raided the thana premises on the midnight of September 16 and found four cops including the SHO uploading seized liquor stocks on a pick-up van standing in the thana premises.
A total of 3,728 litres of liquor were to be destroyed but the cops had kept 945 litres at the malkhana.
Alcoholics have turned to various tricks to procure liquor in “dry” Bihar, so are the mafias who are using innovative ideas to transport liquor.
The police have caught the mafias using ambulances, ATM vans, oil tankers and sacks of vegetables to transport liquor.
